Circle Economy nation scan

Visualizing the environmental and
socio-economic state of countries

Circle Economy Foundation aims to help decision-makers across industries, cities and countries to implement a circular economy that is environmentally sustainable and socially just. One of the services that Circle Economy offers is a nation scan in which users can explore data and scan their country dashboard for insights. This service was developed together with four partners from that target group, like a waste management company in Oman and a Noorwegian non-profit organisation that focuses on circularity.

I designed several interactive data visualizations for the nation scan.

Above: The material flows chart shows the flow of materials through a country. From imported or extracted raw materials, into sectors like food and housing, into being recycled, stored, burned. This is data that’s very hard to comprehend when it’s displayed in a table. However, an interactive visual provides a quick global overview of how a country can improve its material flows. Which materials in which sectors are excessive? Which sector produces a lot of waste compared to other countries? At the same time the detailed values can also still be viewed.

Below: The societal and planetary boundaries chart shows the social shortfall and ecological overshoot of a country. How does your country compare with others on achieving the goal of a safe and just future for all? How many social goals does it achieve? How many planetary boundaries does it transgress?
The challenge was to combine very different topic with different units and scales into one visual.
