Paygo Energy app & dashboard
Visualizing actionable information for
clean fuel providers in informal settlements
Paygo Energy provides clean and affordable cooking gas to people living in slums in Nairobi, Kenya. Paygo’s smart gas meter allows pay-per-use LPG. LPG burns much cleaner than charcoal or kerosine, which are often used for cooking. The smart meter automatically notifies the back office as soon as a customer is low on cooking gas. An agent then goes to the customer’s house with a full gas cylinder before the customer runs out.
Paygo needed a digital system to facilitate this process. I designed a mobile app for the agents, and an online dashboard for the managers.

The main challenge was to come up with a solution to the specific difficulties that employees encounter while working in a slum. For example: how do you find a customer’s house if the house has no address? And how do you make sure the app still functions if there’s no internet connection?
The app and dashboard had to be super user friendly and support the employees in their daily work. That’s why I joined some of the employees during their work in an informal settlement. We also did several user tests with low-fi prototypes as well as high-fi designs of the app.
The result is an intuitive interface design that guides the agents during their tasks when they go to customers and exchange gas tanks.
Back in the neighbourhood hub the manager can keep track of customers needing new cooking gas through an online dashboard. She can also see how the agents are performing.
